Functional Neurology and Cold Laser Stimulus

What is functional neurology?

Functional neurology is the process of treating the deficiencies in the brain’s neural pathways without the use of drugs or invasive treatments.

What are neural pathways and why are they important?

The human brain functions by sending and receiving electrical signals though the nervous system. These signals can be sent to another region of the brain (visual input sensors) or to the rest of the body (voluntary movements, digestion, breathing, etc.). These pathways act as electrical information highways and just like a regular highway, if they aren’t maintained or aren’t functioning smoothly, information gets backed up and doesn’t transmit efficiently. This leads to a multitude of potential health complications.

How does functional neurology repair neural pathways?

The brain is a muscle and just as exercises can strengthen skeletal muscles, there are exercises that can strengthen the brain as well. Certain movements of the eyes and limbs trigger different pathways in the brain, therefore if we know which of these are deficient, we can implement specific exercises that slowly rebuild and strengthen these defective pathways.

Infrared Cold Lasers

What is a cold laser?

A cold laser is an infrared laser which is able to penetrate through layers of tissue, including muscle and bone, without generating heat. When the laser encounters a tissue, it induces something called photobiomodulation, or more simply, the energy of the laser is converted by the cells into chemical energy which they can then use to power their innate repair mechanisms at the molecular level. It’s a bit like giving your cells a big cup of coffee. They always had the ability to regenerate and heal, but now they have the energy reserves to make it happen quickly. This can help drastically accelerate the body’s natural healing process for conditions ranging from sciatica to musculoskeletal issues.

How does a cold laser assist functional neurology?

When a cold laser is used for functional neurology, the energy in the photons that pass through the skull are taken up by the cells that comprise the neural pathways. These cells can then begin to repair themselves and lay down new proteins to strengthen the neural connections that our body needs to function. The brain’s pathways fire at specific wavelengths, so by changing the wavelength of the laser, we can target particular conditions and strengthen specific pathways.

Brain Blossom Program™
The Brain Blossom Program™ is an online, at home, brain and body exercise and educational program
Who can benefit from the Brain Blossom Program™?
Everybody! The program is designed to reduce stress and deflective tendencies in order to help individuals engage in, communicate with, learn from and enjoy their world. The only requirement is a partner to work with to administer some of the games!
Why the Brain Blossom Program™?
Think of development like a flower, as it is grows from a seed, everything that happens around it has an impact on what it will be when it’s fully grown. Human development is much the same. Our environments can greatly impact our most basic functions, like the way we move our body, communicate with language, and use our sensory systems. These impacted functions are what we at the Brain Blossom Program™ call Deflective Behaviors™ and they can take many forms. Deflective Behaviors™ can stem from many combinations of factors, but ultimately, they change the way a person learns, behaves, communicates, and socializes. The Brain Blossom Program™ is designed to give specific body and brain games to help a person move on from their Deflective Behaviors™ to a healthier form of processing their environment.
5 Stages of the Brain Blossom Program™
Based on the individual’s results of the initial evaluation they will be placed in one of five stages.
1. Seed Stage™
Games that are targeted towards developing and practicing skills and movements common in early life.
2. Sprout Stage™
Games that are targeted towards developing and practicing skills from early life as well as integrating gross motor and fine motor function.
3. Growth Stage™
Games that are targeted towards gross motor, fine motor, cross body, core and eye coordination as well as spatial awareness integration.
4. Flower Stage™
Games that are targeted towards increased coordination of the eyes, mental imagery games, as well as increasing complexity in multi-sensory and simultaneous processing games.
5. Blossom Stage™
Games that are targeted towards fast paced, complex, simultaneous body, brain and eye coordination coupled with greater cognitive challenges.

Chiropractic care benefits all aspects of your body's ability to be healthy. This is accomplished by working with the nervous system--the communication system between your brain and body. Doctors of Chiropractic work to correct spinal, pelvic and cranial misalignments (subluxations). When misaligned, these structures create an imbalance in surrounding muscles and ligaments. Additionally, the resulting nerve system stress may affect the body's ability to function optimally. The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation/ SI joint dysfunction. In so doing neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is improved. Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association discovered this adjustment as a safe means to restore proper pelvic balance and function.

This specific sacral analysis can be used on all weight bearing individuals to determine S/I joint dysfunction/ sacral subluxation and is therefore applicable for the entire population. The assessment includes heel flexion to buttocks, with restricted flexion indicating the affected SI joint. Correction is made with a diversified, sacral adjustment. It is used on all weight bearing individuals presenting with this biomechanical restriction. Common symptoms include (but are not limited to) low back pain, sciatic neuralgia, and symptoms associated with sacral subluxation and/ or S/I joint dysfunction. The ICPA recognizes that in a theoretical and clinical framework of the Webster Technique in the care of pregnant women, sacral subluxation may contribute to difficult labor for the mother (i.e., dystocia). Dystocia is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby mal-presentation.32 The correction of sacral subluxation may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystocia.

In this clinical and theoretical framework, it is proposed that sacral misalignment may contribute to these three primary causes of dystocia via uterine nerve interference, pelvic misalignment and the tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments. The resulting tense muscles and ligaments and their aberrant effect on the uterus may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth.

In regards to pregnant mothers, Dr. Webster reported that when a mother sought care and her baby was in a breech position, the restoration of pelvic neuro-biomechanics with this adjustment also frequently facilitated optimal fetal positioning. There are cases published in the chiropractic literature that support this theory. More research is needed and is currently underway by the ICPA.
The obstetric literature has determined that correct positioning of the baby in-utero affect birth outcome and decrease the potential for undue stress to the baby's developing spine and nerve system. Obstetric literature has determined the importance of normal pelvic neuro-biomechanics including uterine function and pelvic alignment for the prevention of dystocia (difficult birth). It has also determined that correct positioning of the baby in-utero affects birth outcome and decreases the potential for undue stress to the baby's developing spine and nerve system. Chiropractic literature has determined the significance of sacral adjustments in normalizing pelvic neuro-biomenchanics. It is therefore considered prudent that this specific sacral analysis and adjustment be used throughout pregnancy to detect and alleviate sacral imbalance and optimize pelvic neuro-biomechanics in the mother. Because of the particular female adaptations from the increase of hormones, weight gain and postural adaptations, pregnant mothers have a greater chance of sacral subluxation and neuro-biomechanical imbalance than the general population. Additionally, because of the effect the chiropractic adjustment has on all body functions by reducing nerve system stress, pregnant mothers may have significant benefit by having their spines checked regularly throughout pregnancy, optimizing health benefits for both the mother and baby.

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association offers classes of instruction and awards qualified attendees a Certificate of Proficiency in the Webster protocol. Only those doctors on our site maintain recognized certification status for the Webster protocol.

Sports Injury:

Athletes have been benefiting from Chiropractic care for many years; however, it has only recently been receiving attention from the media. Athletes of all types, from the weekend warrior to the world-class athlete, utilize Chiropractic because it is a drug-free way to better health and performance.

Chiropractic adjustments help ensure that the body functions as efficiently as possible, which can maximize healing and recovery from all types of injuries.

“I would estimate that in excess of 90% of all world-class athletes use Chiropractic care to prevent injuries and to increase their performance potential.”
-SEAN ATKINS, Ph D Exercise Physiologist

Sports Injury

The following is just a partial list of athletes who use Chiropractic care: Joe Montana, Roger Craig, Keith Jackson, Emmit Smith, Chris Carter, Evander Holyfield Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones, Jr., Wade Boggs, Penny Hardaway, Jon Smoltz, Ken Griffey, Jr. Mark McGwire, Ryne Sandberg,, Ricky Bell, Brett Butler, Dominique Wilkins, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippin, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Robert Parish, Gerald Wilkins, Lee Haney, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dr. Frank Columbu, Irving Fryar, Brett Hall, Tiger Woods, Roberto Clemente Michael Carbajol, Bob Hayes, Muhammad Ali, Ed “Too Tall” Jones, Alex Karras, Gary Clark, Mark May, Charles Haley, Bill Fralic, Dan Marino, Warren Moon, Tim Dwight, Jack Dempsey, Fred Funk, Beth Daniel, Mary Lou Retton, Olga Korbut, Wayne Gretzky, Rocky Marciano, Dan O’Brien, Bruce Jenner, Donovan Bailey, Mac Wilkins, Dwight Stones, Mary Decker, Willie Banks, Nancy Ditz, Gregg Blasingame, Billy Jean King. Tracy Austin, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Jim Connors, Jan Stephenson.

Doctors of Chiropractic focus on the entire structure of the body rather than just the obviously injured part. For this reason, they can often detect and help to prevent an injury that might normally be overlooked or ignored.

Because Doctors of Chiropractic are experts in the field of human biomechanics, they are very aware of proper posture and movement. By observing an athlete in action, a Chiropractor can often detect and prevent a structural problem that can lead to injury or poor performance. Athletic injures are often caused by improper biomechanics or muscle imbalances within the spine.

“Chiropractic has helped thousands of athletes, professional and amateur, overcome an injury without resorting to surgery”.

Functional Nutrition:

We start with a comprehensive history and medical symptom questionnaire, and examination of which allows us target systems (not just symptoms) that may be under stress or not functioning to their full potential. From there we may order blood or specialty lab diagnostics to refine treatment protocols.

Treatment usually includes high quality nutritional and botanical remedies, along with lifestyle and diet management. Comprehensive follow ups are usually performed 1 time per month, to every 3 months.

Certified Postural Neurologist:

For the postural analysis we do a few photos and it generates a report that we share with the patient. This is what a report from the posture analysis would look like:

It is important that you understand that your spine is the foundation of health. The body is designed to have the head, rib cage, and pelvis perfectly balanced upon one another in both the front and side views. If the posture is deviated from normal, then the spine is also deviated from the normal healthy position.

Unfortunately, abnormal posture has been associated with the development and progression of many spinal conditions and injuries including: increased muscle activity and disc injury, scoliosis, work lifting injuries, sports injuries, back pain, neck pain, headaches, carpal tunnel symptoms, shoulder and ankle injuries as well as many other conditions. It is for this health consequence you should strive to improve your spinal and postural alignment towards normal.
